Healing Image Project

“Healing Image”

Project overview:
The healing image project is a process of acquiring an image using photography that feels healing to you. The basic process is amazingly simple yet has the potential to deliver profound effects.
I took this photograph to represent where I have the power in any new opportunity to reach out and “open the door.” The old expression, “when one door closes another door opens” is profound. Yet for me, the real challenge, metaphorically speaking, seems to be having the courage to reach out and turn the knob. I took this photo at a time when a new opportunity was unfolding and I was afraid to reach out and take it. I had a bad case of the “what ifs.” When I found this doorknob, it spoke to me as if to say, “I’m right here. All you have to do is turn me and this door will open for you.” The fact that the door was old held a special charm and I felt like I was not alone. I wondered how many people had moved through this same door. Every time I look at this photo, I remember that I can do it.

Materials:
Camera- film or digital
Place to go to hunt for your image
Place to process prints or printer and paper if using a digital camera

Instructions:
1.    Take a few moments to focus on any issue you wish to address with this process.
2.    In addition to thinking about the issue, feel it. Let the feelings fill you.
3.    Take your camera and go for a walk with the intent to find some image that speaks to you. Don’t over analyze it, just let yourself be drawn to anything that stands out.
4.    Photograph any images that speak to you or that draw your attention. You may find several images. Go with it. Feel your way along.
5.    When you are finished taking pictures, either print them (digital) or take the film to be processed.
6.    Put your photo someplace you will see it often.
·      Note: you may or may not be aware of “why” this image feels healing to you. That’s ok. Stay with the feeling.
·      Any place is a good one to look for your photo. I am often surprised and how and where I will find an image that speaks to me. Sometimes right under my nose in my house!

Variations:
1.    Photo processing software like Photoshop can be used to enhance and alter your photos. This can add to and deepen the effect of the process.
2.    You can print your photos in black and white, adding color with photo tinting markers.
3.    Multiple images can be combined into a photo collage.
